1- Presentation

CineSud is a alternative distribution network for audiovisual works led by a group of film societies and film federations of several Latin-American countries under the patronage of the International Federation of Film Societies IFFS.

We believe that there are thousands of movies that do not find any exhibition opportunity and remains archived without possibility of finding his spectator. We want to bring together the author and the exhibitor in order to promote the dissemination of a high quality works, that otherwise would not find the way to be exhibited outside a local region or a reduce group of people.

CineSud Main Goals

- To promote the free distribution of audiovisual materials among the film societies and other alternative spaces for cinema promotion.

- To give international visibility to the works of local authors who do not have place in the traditional exhibition circuits.

History

CineSud was born as an initiative of Catalan Federation of Film Societies for the distribution of independent movies with the aim to exhibit them freely in film societies and other alternative and non-commercial exhibition spaces.

In December 2001, taking advantage of its annual Assembly, the Catalan Federation of Film Societies organized an International meeting of film societies where the CineSud initiative was created.

In 2006, five years later, in Matera city (Italy) during the International Film Festival of Film Societies organized by the IFFS the project acquires a strong international character. Based on the discussion that took place in Matera the CineSud coordination group grows by including members of several countries and start the development of an on-line catalog (www.mundokino.net) with the available films. Matera's Letter is the frame that propitiates the development of the CineSud project.

From December 2001 in Girona to December 2006, these are the most important activities developed under the CineSud initiative:

- 2002

- At Prada de Conflent and Perpignan (France), there were meetings among federation of film societies of the Mediterranean region together with the Institut Jean Vigo. Additionally there was a presentation of the CineSud project at the Perpignan University.

- In Portugal, a mini itinerant cycle of recent Catalan films was organized that was presented in seven film societies and universities of that country.

- In Carballiño (Galicia/Spain) there was CineSud participation in the XOCIVIGA festival and also a meeting was organized among federations from Italy, France, Portugal and Spain (Galicia and Catalonia).

- In La Garriga (Catalonia/Spain), a mostra of North African cinema was organized and representatives of Moroccan film societies and of the Tetuán Film Festival were invited.

- 2003.

- In Narbone (France), in early 2003, a film interchange between France and Catalonia was organized during a film mostra of Hispanic Cinema.

- During the Festival de Pézénas (France) the seed of the CineSud project was presented to a broad audience of international associations and local film festivals.

- In June 2003 in Reggio (Italy) the third half-yearly meeting of the CineSud coordinating group was realized.

- In March-April 2003 there was a meeting among federations of film societies from Morocco and Catalonia. Additionally a cooperation project with the Xaouen film society (Morocco) was started.

- In March a mostra of short movies from the CineSud project was screened at the BEC (Barcelona Espai de Cinema) film society.

- 2004

- In September 2004 during the VII Mostra de Cine de la Garriga there was an international meeting of the CineSud organizers

- Presentation of the CineSud project, during the International Film Festival of Film Societies 2004 to the international community of film societies, and a call for participation.

- In September 2004 in La Garriga, there was a screening of short movies from CineSud organized by the La Garriga Film Society and during its annual Mostra de Cinema.

- In may 2004 the Cineclub dels Amics del Cinema de la Capital del cava de Sant Sadurní d’Anoia (Catalonia/Spain) organized a screening of short movies from the CineSud catalog.

- 2005.

- In April 2005 in Denia (Spain), there was a screening of CineSud short movies organized by the Cineclub Pessic during the annual general assembly of the Catalan Federation of Film Societies.

- 2005. In October 2005 a screening of CineSud short movies was presented in Medellin (Colombia), organized by the Pulpmovies Film Society during Indivisible2 (Medellin Independent Film Mostra)

- 2005. In September 2005. a presentation of short movies from CineSud was presented in Granollers (Catalonia/Spain), organized by the Asociación Cultural de Granollers Film Society

- 2006

- In 2006 the CineSud Project has been relaunched with the incorporation of several film societies and federations from Latin America. This process has been developed at the meetings in Matera (Italy) during the International Festival of Film Societies and during the second Iberoamerican meeting of film societies (Sao Paulo. Brasil). From this meetings the Cineclub network expanded to include members and collaborators from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba Ecuador, Mexico, Uruguay y República Dominicana.

- In October 2006 a screening of films from the CineSud project was presented at the Indivisible3. (Medellin Independent Film Mostra) organized by the Pulpmovies Film Society.

- In October 2006 the Nueva Helvecia Film Society from Uruguay organized a film session with CineSud movies from the Girona Film Festival that was presented to primary/secondary students.

- In October 2006 in Vic (Catalonia/Spain) a selection of CineSud Colombian short movies were screened at a local film festival organized by the Vic Film Society.

- November 2006 in Mexico DF (Mexico) a screening of CineSud films was organized by the Cineclub Bravo.

- November 206. A selection of Colombian short movies from CineSud was presented in Bellpuig (Catalonia/Spain), organized by the Fundació Pagesos Solidaris, a Catalan peasant NGO.

2- WHO WE ARE ?

CineSud members are federations of films societies and film societies from several countries of the world that together want to promote a project of alternative distribution of audiovisual works among film societies and non-profit organizations that share the aim to open spaces for the exhibition of local authors from all over the world. The project has been constructed with the support of the International Federation of Film Societies who has made possible the spaces for meetings of film societies from many countries

3- Social Contract

In order to screen the films of the CineSud catalog there must be an agreement between the parts involved, this agreement is based on responsibility and trust, and is called the CineSud “Social Contract”

Commitments of the CineSud group.

The films included in the catalog are selected by film societies or federations around the world. In this way we try to maintain the quality and suitability of the films for the film societies community.
The catalog is open to any form of audiovisual expression: shorts and long movies, documentary and fiction, animation and video clip. All the movies are in their original language and should have, at least, English subtitles.
The catalog is open for the general public and can be accessed from the Mundokino web page. www.mundokino.net
All the films are in DVD format.
All the films have an open license that allows the freedom to copy and to exhibit them under certain conditions. The suggested license for authors is the creative commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDeriv license.
CineSud will send DVD copies to the interested film societies or organizations. All delivery fees must be paid by the destination organization.
CineSud is a non-profit project. CineSud wants to reward the authors in a just way using a non-commercial exhibition approach. Based on that CineSud will be able to get donations from the exhibitors. These donations will be agreed in every case, depending on the country and the situation of the film society or exhibition organization and always under the supposition that the exhibition is NON-COMMERCIAL. The donations are set aside to reward the authors and to fund the CineSud infrastructure. These donations do not constitute any kind of exhibition fee.
Commercial uses of CineSud material need to be accorded between CineSud coordination group and film makers.
For the case of the DVD pack for the IFFS, the donation is included in the cost of DVD pack. The exhibitors that receive this pack do not need to make any other donation to the CineSud organization group. This only apply for the titles included in the DVD pack.

Exhibitor:

The film society or organization interested in making CineSud exhibitions should contact the closer federation of film society that is member of the CineSud network. If there is not any organization close to the country of the interested group they should contact the CineSud international offices, currently co-located in Barcelona and Mexico DF.
In the public exhibition of the films the complete credit information of the films must be presented. And the integrity of the audiovisual works must be preserved by presenting always the whole movie. In detail the exhibitors have to respect all the conditions established in the distribution license used by CineSud.
It should be a mention to the CineSud distribution Project in the exhibition places: by including the CineSud logo in the promotional material, or by introducing the CineSud project to the audience.
The organization must inform the CineSud coordination group of all presentations of the CineSud works. This information must include: the date of the presentation, the main characteristics of the exhibition: name of the event, number of spectators, etc. Sending additional material like photographs of the event and promotional materials would be highly appreciated.

4- HOW TO PARTICIPATE?

I- Films societies and Federations of Film Societies interested in making PRSENTATIONS

The federations interested in making presentation of CineSud materials have to contact any of the international offices of the CineSud Project. Film societies should contact their corresponding federation in order to get the CineSud materials. If there is not a federation in their country or region of the film society they can contact directly to the CineSud offices.

Currently there are two offices of the CineSud:

II- Film makers interested in including their materials in the CineSud catalog.

Authors that want to include their materials in the CineSud catalog can contact to any of the film societies or federations members of the CineSud network indicating that they want to participate in the CineSud project and providing a DVD copy and all the requested information of their films. The works must be licensed with a open license like the creative commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs. All the exhibitions in the CineSud project will be non-commercial, but the CineSud will reward the authors with the 50% of all the collected donations that CineSud receive from the organizations that arrange exhibitions of CineSud films.

III- Non-profit organizations and Film Festivals

Non-profit organizations that are not part of the CineSud network should contact the International Offices and make an agreement for the exhibition of CineSud materials. A contribution to the project could be asked depending on the conditions of each presentation.

5- CREATIVE COMMONS LICENSES

Creative Commons licenses are an alternative mechanism for the distribution of digital contents (text, photos, musics, movies) in which the authors of the works explicitly liberate certain rights whereas they maintain themselves some of them. This mechanism is opposed to the traditional copyright model in which of “all rights are reserved” because it allows a bigger freedom to use, copy, distribute, exhibit and therefore it increments the potential of the people to have access to cultural goods.

One of several available licenses in Creative Commons is the Attribution-NonComercial-NoDerivs by which an author decides that he/she allows the free copy, distribution and public exhibition of his/her work under the condition that:

· Attribution. You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor.

· Noncommercial. You may not use this work for commercial purposes.

· No Derivative Works. You may not alter, transform, or build upon this work.

· For any reuse or distribution, you must make clear to others the license terms of this work.

· Any of these conditions can be waived if you get permission from the copyright holder.

The author can select a more open license that also allows the user to modify the original work. In that case the author can use a Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike license
